The Music of Curaçao

You will hear the Blue Wave before you see it. Curaçao’s music is African-rooted, joyful and full of story.

Tumba

Tumba is the island’s most internationally renowned sound and the beating heart of the Carnival Road March. Each year the Festival di Tumba crowns the season’s anthem.

Tambú

Sometimes called the ‘Curaçao blues’, Tambú was first sung by enslaved people, often women, to voice pain and hope, accompanied by the tambú drum and the agan (an iron ploughshare) or chapi (a hoe).

Seú and Ritmo Kombiná

  • Seú, the harvest-festival rhythm, now paraded through Willemstad each year.
  • Ritmo Kombiná, literally ‘mixed rhythm’, a blend of styles that’s hugely popular with the island’s youth.

When the team scores, this is the soundtrack. Ban bati tambú!
