Curaçao 101: About the Island

Bon bini na Kòrsou. Before you follow the Blue Wave to the World Cup, here is the island behind the team.

The essentials

  • Status: an autonomous country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands since 10 October 2010 (locally, Pais Kòrsou).
  • Capital: Willemstad, a UNESCO World Heritage city famous for its colourful Dutch-colonial waterfront.
  • People: around 156,000 residents from a remarkable mix of cultures.
  • Languages: Papiamentu (the heart language), plus Dutch, English and Spanish widely spoken.
  • Where: the southern Caribbean, just off the coast of Venezuela, and outside the hurricane belt. One of the ‘ABC islands’ with Aruba and Bonaire.

Sun, sea and a story far bigger than its size, that is Curaçao. Ban Kòrsou!
